November 1940 – March 2025

It is with a heavy heart that we convey the news of Devi Kundu’s passing. She passed away peacefully in hospital on 1 March 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Devi (or Devi Di, as she was affectionately known) was one of the founding members of The Tagore Centre UK in the mid-1980s, and her loss will be deeply felt by all who knew her. A longtime executive committee member, she dedicated herself to teaching music and Bengali classes at the centre. She was also a key event organiser, working tirelessly alongside other volunteers to lead major initiatives, including the international conference Revisiting Tagore, held at the University of London in 2011.
A passionate supporter of the centre and its mission to bring communities together, Devi also had a vibrant and joyful spirit. She loved to celebrate, dance, play games, and sing with fellow members. Her love for music extended beyond the centre – she was a longtime member of the renowned Nupur music and song group, where she formed lasting friendships and performed both as a solo artist and as part of an ensemble.
Outside of the centre she was passionate about science and medical research, working at the Royal Free Hospital during the 1980s as a researcher, contributing to ground breaking research outcomes and continuing until the 2010s as a volunteer after retirement.
Her warmth and unconditional love for her family and friends will be greatly missed.
