Obituary: Arundhati Biswas

It is with great sadness that we report our beloved member Arundhati Biswas passed away earlier this year.

Arundhati joined the Tagore Centre UK soon after its foundation and remained an active and dedicated member until the last days of her life. She served as Vice Chair, and as Cultural Secretary for many years. She was a key instigator of The Tagore Centre UK’s flagship feature, the Sunday Events.

Arundhati came from a family steeped in classical music and radical politics. She was a driving force behind many cultural events in the UK, and anyone who visited The Tagore Centre UK experienced her enthusiasm, curiosity, humility, and generosity of spirit. She had the rare gift of making friends with anyone. Speaking to her for just five minutes you would feel that you had known her for a lifetime.

She was gifted in many fields and had the energy to cultivate a huge variety of friendships around the world while developing her own practice as a teacher, a musician, a visual artist, a book lover, a translator, and a mentor in early years education.

Through her work as Cultural Secretary of The Tagore Centre UK she nurtured and supported many artists, scholars, and audiences. However she was also an accomplished singer in her own right, as can be heard on her posthumously-released album https://youtu.be/yPe6MdxkqDQ?si=aiWlxUgBxqRN42-D.

Arundhati was a warm and wise friend, loved by all who came in contact with her. We will genuinely miss her. May her soul rest in peace.
